Carbondale Area School District Dedicates Court to State Championship Basketball Coaches

On December 26, 2023, Carbondale Area officially dedicated and named its basketball court after two of its former longtime head basketball coaches who each brought home a state championship to their respective teams: Boys Basketball Coach Glenn Moskosky and the late Girls Basketball Coach MaryAnn Egnotovich.

Mary Ann Egnotovich was the face of high school girls basketball. A passionate educator, the longtime Carbondale Area basketball coach worked tirelessly at promoting female sports at the start of Title IX — the 1972 federal law that opened the doors for female student-athletes — and poured her heart into creating opportunities she had been denied, and in the process, she built the Chargerettes into a state powerhouse. Her legacy is unmatched and highlighted by an undefeated season and a PIAA Class 2A championship and the love and compassion she had for her players. As a coach, Egnotovich had no equal during the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. Carbondale Area was a juggernaut and won nine straight Lackawanna League championships, four District 2 titles, and finished her career with a record of 289-77. She was inducted into the Northeastern Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

In 1969-70, Egnotovich helped found the Lackawanna League for girls basketball, which consisted of four teams — Carbondale Area, Lakeland, Valley View and Mid Valley. That first season, she was the only female head coach. As a coach, her candor, discipline and wealth of basketball knowledge built Carbondale Area into the premier girls basketball program in the eastern part of the state. She was fair, but demanding. From 1970 to 1975, Carbondale Area posted a record of 103-3. In 1973, the first season for the PIAA playoffs in girls basketball, Carbondale Area defeated Central Columbia in its first round before losing to eventual champion Allentown Central Catholic. Two years later, the Chargerettes again won a state playoff game as the tournament expanded to 16 teams, beating Abington of District 1 before losing to Allentown Dieruff. Then, in 1977, Carbondale Area captured the attention of fans and the city. The Chargerettes went 31-0 and won the Class 2A state championship by defeating Mars, 62-42, in the state final.

Coach Glenn Moskosky began his teaching and coaching career in the Mid Valley School District in 1970. In 1974, Coach Moskosky began his career here at Carbondale Area teaching Physical Education and Driver Education, as well as coaching Basketball and Baseball, and serving as the Athletic Director for sixteen years. He was the Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach for seven years and the Varsity Baseball Coach for five years. He started is Basketball Coaching career at the Freshman level. After coaching the Freshmen team for five years, he moved up and became the Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach, working with Coach Turonis for seven years.

In 1986, Coach Moskosky became the Head Varsity Basketball Coach here at CA. During his time in the position, he attained many accomplishments and brought pride and glory to the school and entire community. He won five Lackawanna League Championships and Two District 2 Championships. He coached his teams to three PIAA Final Four Championships in 1991, 1993, and 1994. In 1993, he led the Chargers to a PIAA State Championship after a 30-0 record and returned to the state final in 1994. In those two years, the Chargers finished with 59 consecutive wins and just one loss. He was named the Lackawanna League Coach of the Year in 1991, 1993, and 1994. In 1993, he was named the PIAA Small School Coach of the Year. Additionally, he coached the Lackawanna League All-Star game on two occasions  and also the Pennsylvania team in the Mid-State Round Ball Showcase. He retired after ten seasons as a coach with a record of 203-67.

The Carbondale Area School District congratulates Coach Glenn Moskosky and the late MaryAnn Egnotovich as well as their families on this wonderful honor and thanks them for their contributions to the Carbondale Area community.
