On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Carbondale Area students had the opportunity to view a live-streamed sleeve gastrectomy performed at the Hershey Medical Center, courtesy of the Surgery Live! program. The sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure designed to aid in weight loss by reducing the size of the stomach. Students were guided step by step through the surgery by a team of experts who provided insightful commentary and answered questions in real-time. Students gained awareness into the challenges faced by both patients and medical professionals, as well as the profound impact that these procedures can have on individuals’ lives. The Surgery Live! Program is encouraging future generations of aspiring medical professionals to explore, learn, and grow. The Carbondale Area School District thanks Educational Opportunity Centers, Inc. for helping to make this unique experience possible for our students!
“Viewing the gastrectomy was very helpful with seeing if this is something I am interested in and provided me with a lot of information on this procedure and surgeries in general,” stated junior Hannah Mccaffrey, who would like to pursue a health care profession. “I hope this helps me narrow down my options.”
