We would like to tell you about an exciting opportunity for you to share with your rising sophomores, rising juniors and rising seniors who enjoy physics. The University of Scranton will host the Radio Blaster Physics Summer Camp from July 20 through July 22, 2021.
During this exciting camp, students will learn from engaging faculty and current students as they explore topics in Physics dealing with electricity, magnetism, light and radio waves. The first half of the camp will be a common curriculum where students will learn the following:
- Using an oscilloscope to measure voltages
- Faraday’s law – how to make an electric current with a magnet
- “Looking” at sound waves with a signal generator and an oscilloscope
- Making a loudspeaker from scratch
- Making an electric generator
- Radio waves
In the second stage of the camp, students will be doing an experiment or project based on what they learned. They will also pair off for experiments based on their interests, which will include:
- Resonance in Action: Students will have six separate coil sets that they can use to illustrate resonance. Actually, they will light an LED from a distance, with the energy just traveling through the air!
- Speed of Light: There are several methods to measure the speed of light. All are easy enough to understand, yet very interesting and exciting.
- Microwave Optics: Using a microwave kit, students will see double slit interference and refraction.
- Make a Radio: Students will have the opportunity to make their own working radio.
This camp is limited to 12 students and they can apply here by June 30, 2021. Students will be notified if they have been selected to attend this camp on July 7, 2021. There is no fee, and breakfast and lunch are provided. Please note that students will need their own transportation to and from campus.
