Dr. Gary Smedley

Carbondale Area School District Board of Education – President
Dr. Gary Smedley grew up in Carbondale. He is a 2005 graduate of Carbondale Area School District. After high school, Dr. Smedley received his doctorate from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USciences) in 2011 and was licensed in 2011 by American Pharmacists Association Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery. He has worked as a long-term care pharmacist at Figliomeni Pharmacy Care in Carbondale since receiving his license. Additionally, Dr. Smedley serves in the capacity of Pharmacist/Pharmacology Expert Witness for Lackawanna County PA Courts, as a Retail Pharmacist for Wagner’s Clifford Pharmacy, and as a CVS Vaccination Pharmacist. He also regularly provides services to in-store clinics, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
Dr. Smedley bleeds red, white, and blue, and he has pharmacy in his blood. His father was a former physical education teacher at Carbondale Area School District. Dr. Smedley’s mother, Jennifer Tomaine Smedley, is also a pharmacist and Pharmacy Director at Wayne Memorial Hospital, and his sister, Jacinta, is currently at pharmacist at Wayne Memorial Hospital. His lovely girlfriend, Kelsey, has worked three years for Representative Bridget Kozierowski in Constituent Services. Dr. Smedley and Kelsey enjoy attending Penn State events.
Besides being Carbondale Area School District Board President since 2011, Dr. Smedley is active in several different community roles: Lackawanna County Pharmacy Association President, Lackawanna County Democratic Committee Chairman 114 Legislative District, Multi-Purpose Stadium Authority Chairman Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania School Boards Association Legislative Advisory Council, Dreams2Career Board of Directors, Andrew Mitchell Hose Company Number 1, and Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church Feast Committee Captain.
Mr. John “Jigger” Jordan

Carbondale Area School District- Vice President
Mr. Jigger Jordan has lived in Carbondale since 1951. He is now retired, but he worked for the railroad for eleven years and as a prison maintenance mechanic for 21 years. Mr. Jordan also served in the PA National Guard and is a former mayor of Carbondale.
Mr. Jordan and his wife, Bernadette, a retired 4th grade and computer teacher from Carbondale Area, are the parents of five children, all of whom graduated from Carbondale Area School District. Mr. Jordan is also “Poppy” to nine grandchildren, who are the apple of his eye.
Dr. Paul Kaczmarcik

Carbondale Area School District Board of Education – Secretary
Dr. Paul Kaczmarcik is a graduate of Carbondale’s Benjamin Franklin High School. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Master’s in Secondary Administration from the University of Scranton. He also earned an elementary and middle school teacher certification from the same institution. Dr. Kaczmarcik completed his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility at Lehigh University and his Doctor of Education at Widener University.
Dr. Kaczmarcik and his wife Marcella (Ziemba) Kacmarcik are parents to one daughter and have been blessed with two grandsons. He was born in Carbondale and lived in Baltimore, Maryland, for a dozen years before relocating and returning to the Pioneer City for the past fifty-seven years. During his four decades of service at Carbondale Area School District, he served in several different capacities: Social Studies Teacher, Vice-Principal of Carbondale Area Junior Senior High School, Principal of Carbondale Area Junior Senior High School, Principal of Carbondale Area Elementary School, Supervisor of the GED – Adult Basic Education Programs, and Transportation Coordinator.
In addition to serving on the school board and being the Secretary, Dr. Kaczmarcik is actively involved in the community as Former President and Board Member of United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern PA, member of the Parish Council – Mount Carmel and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Churches, member of the Carbondale Area PROSPER team, and member of the Penn State Extension Advisory Council. Dr. Kaczmarcik also serves as Carbondale Area’s representative on the NEIU #19 board.
Mr. Dave Osborne

Carbondale Area School District Board of Education – Treasurer
Mr. Dave Osborne is a lifelong resident of Carbondale and graduate of Saint Rose High School. After graduation, he attended Penn State University, where he studied and received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer and worked forty-three years at LaBella Associates. He just recently retired.
Family is important to Mr. Osborne. His wife, Nancy, was a Business teacher at Carbondale Area School District. Mr. Osborne is the father of two married children and is a proud grandpa to one grandchild. He is also an avid hunter and enjoys golfing. Currently, in addition to being on the board of school directors, he serves on the Carbondale Redevelopment Authority Board.
Mr. Joseph Caviston has lived in Carbondale most of his life. Although he is not a graduate of Carbondale Area, his wife, Michelle, is a 1983 graduate of Carbondale Area. He attended Lackawanna Jr. College and Wilkes University, where he earned a business degree.
Mr. Caviston and his wife are parents to three grown children. All of their children attended and graduated (2004, 2013, and 2020) from Carbondale Area High School. Their outstanding education enabled them to pursue degrees in English/Media Communications, Hospitality/Marketing, and Political Science/Labor Relations , respectively. The Cavistons are also blessed with a grandson who calls Mr. Caviston “Bobba”. While Mr. Caviston is an avid hunter and fisherman, his favorite activities involve spending time with his grandson and building projects for his children.
In addition to serving on the school board for over twenty years, Mr. Caviston coached football for the Carbondale Jr. Chargers for over twenty years. He is on the Carbondale Housing Authority Board (20 years), Carbondale Commercial Board (20 years), and serves as a Democratic Committeeperson (10 years).
Mr. Jimmy Dovin is a Charger Proud graduate and a member of the Class of 1986. His children followed a similar path, graduating from Carbondale Area in 2020 and 2018, respectively. He lives in Region 1, and the family enjoys spending time with their beloved dog, Laela. After graduation, he attended the Williamsport Area Community College (currently known as Penn College of Technology) and received a 2-year certification in Plumbing and Heating in 1988. Mr. Dovin has been employed with UGI Penn National Gas for the past twenty-five years.
Mr. Dovin has been involved in his community for many years. He has served in a variety of capacities, including Coach and Board of Director for the greater Carbondale Miss C Softball League, President of the Susquehanna Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (now known as the National Deer Association), President of the Northern Counties Full Fan Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and volunteer fire fighter for the Browndale Fire Company.
He is currently President of the Richmondale Hunting Club and serves as Carbondale Area’s representative on the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Board of Directors.
Mr. Masco is a lifelong West Side resident of Carbondale Area School District and a 2009 graduate of Carbondale Area Jr./Sr. High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management from Pennsylvania State University in 2012. He has been employed at United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA for eight years.
Mr. Masco enjoyed coaching at Carbondale Area School District during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. His love for athletics started in high school when he did the statistics and score book for the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Soccer Teams, the Boys’ Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman Basketball Teams, and Girls’ Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Teams.
Mr. Masco has been active with the feast committee through Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He also volunteers his time on the Pioneer Nights Committee, Carbondale Chapter of UNICO National, Carbondale Chapter of UNICO National (First Vice President), Carbondale Chapter of UNICO Nation Scholarship Committee, Greater Scranton MLK Commission, and Lackawanna County Democratic Committee.
Mr. John Revak joins the board as a retired Certified Public Accountant. While at Sanofi Pasteur, he wrote and taught programs to colleagues regarding Cost Center Budgeting and Management, Report Writing and Analysis, and Capital Budgeting. Mr. Revak attended Penn State Worthington Scranton.
As a historian, Mr. Revak has conducted history education programs throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, including presentations to Carbondale Area High School and the local historical society. Mr. Revak is passionate about creating career readiness opportunities for students. He also understands the role of reading in education, as he has participated in Sanofi Pasteur’s reading program through Head Start in the Poconos.
