Carbondale Area Hosts Summer STEAM Camp

During the three-week Summer STEAM camp, junior/senior high school students were introduced to new concepts and learning strategies. They utilized equipment in the Makerspace, including drones, Ozobots,  3D printers, and engaged in designing with CAD software and coding languages. Each STEM challenge integrated real-world components, allowing students to apply principles of science, technology, engineering, and math to their designs.
Additionally, students designed and crafted various paper airplanes to determine the best design. They studied aerodynamics and learned to calculate the distance and speed of each design. Students also studied telescopic images of the night sky.

During the Drama Camp, Mrs. Rasmus shared her passion for theater with the students. Students learned about what goes one behind the scenes to make a production. Students also learned the art of improv. Students learned the vocals and choreography for two group numbers that were performed for other camp goers. Groups of students learned scenes from the short play “Check Please” and each gave short performances to conclude a memorable summer on stage!

Carbondale STEAM camp students also worked with clay. Clay incorporates art and earth science with a process of water and heat. Some clay techniques used during camp were coil making, pinch pot, and slab tiles. Students created nature impressions in the tiles, painted coil pots and made small sculptures. Additionally, students developed Mandala math designs: students did a drawing lesson using fractions to create a piece of art. They discussed fractions, radial design, concentric circles in nature, and repeated elements of art.

A special thank you to all of the teachers who helped make this a successful camp, as well as STEAM Camp organizer, Miss Samantha Masco!
