Carbondale Area senior Sarah Parry, who attends the Career Technology Center (CTC) of Lackawanna County, teamed up with four students to win the Nursing Knowledge Bowl at the CTC District 1 Skills USA Competition earlier this month. The team of Sarah, Margaret Haines, Daniel Pano-Leyva, Sade Pike, and Sage Bilko won the Gold medal in their event against the Susquehanna CTC and will represent District 1 (Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Carbon, Wayne & Pike counties) at the PA State Conference in Hershey in April. They demonstrated communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving and time management skills by determining and presenting the answer to each question presented during the quiz bowl portion of the contest, as well as a written test. Teams of students were tested on their collective knowledge within the healthcare system. Teams were judged on accuracy of answering questions in a variety of categories including: anatomy and physiology; medical terminology, healthcare procedures, healthcare systems; employability skills; legal responsibility; ethics; safety practices; current events related to Healthcare; communication and teamwork.
“I am excited to go to states with my teammates. It was a good experience, and I am glad we were able to do this in person, explained Parry, who plans to attend Wilkes University and study to become a Registered Nurse (RN). The Carbondale Area School District congratulates Sarah on this outstanding accomplishment and wishes her the best of luck at states as well as in her future endeavors.
